What GRC can do for mosque designs – GRC
What GRC Can Create in Mosque Designs
The mosque is considered a symbol of our Arab and Islamic communities, especially in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia,
as the mosque was the first building established in Al-Madinah Al-Munawwarah, the first capital of Islam.
With the expansion of the Islamic state and the scientific developments that followed,
the forms of mosques have varied according to the environment and culture in which they were built.
However, the basic elements of the mosque have remained the same, only differing in their architectural appearance.

The Distinctive Architectural Elements of the Mosque:
The Dome
The dome plays a wonderful aesthetic role, being a half-spherical roofing element.
It can be decorated both inside and outside and supports various design styles.
We discussed domes in detail in a separate article which you can visit
here.
The Minaret
A small elevated structure built on the mosque’s roof. In the past, its main purpose was
for the muezzin to ascend and call to prayer. Today, it primarily provides a distinctive
aesthetic identity to the mosque. For more details on minarets, read our article
here.
The Mihrab (Prayer Niche)
A recessed area in the qibla wall, introduced by Caliph Umar ibn Abdulaziz in 88 AH,
where the Imam stands to lead the prayer. Over time, the mihrab has taken on many decorative
forms crafted from different materials. For more details, visit
here.
Ornamentation
Ornamentation is one of the most important artistic aspects of mosque architecture,
aimed at presenting the building in its most beautiful form.
It is clearly visible in both architectural and decorative elements of mosques.
Ornamentation is classified into two main types:
The first type appears in arches, domes, entrances, mihrabs, and windows –
structural elements essential to the building – yet they still receive rich decorative attention.
The second type appears in purely decorative elements such as
pulpits, doors, and domes’ interiors.
These are adorned with engravings, geometric patterns, and inscriptions in harmonious designs and colors.
